Kindergarten Readiness
Kindergarten is the first educational experience for many children, and there are a wide range of options that parents should consider. There are traditional programs, whole language, developmental, Montessori and Waldorf. Each approach has its advantages, and it is important to know which style best fits your family's values and your child's needs. Parents must think about a range of issues when considering when and where their child should attend kindergarten:
- Is your child ready emotionally and developmentally?
- Is a half-day or full-day program more appropriate?
- Should you consider private or public school placement?
- Would a parent-participation program meet your child's needs?
A psychological evaluation can help parents understand their child's intellectual abilities, early academic skills and educational needs. Some children are highly gifted and would do well in an academically-accelerated program. Other children show early signs of attention problems or learning disabilities and may need early intervention programs to address these needs. Regardless of your child's abilities or needs, a psychological evaluation can help you make a more informed decision.
